Small Business Thursday—Birchwood Creek
Unique and Handmade
“Birchwood Creek showcases handmade unique jewelry, driftwood art & home decor created from fallen wood and found objects. All pyrography is drawn freehand.”
Birchwood Creek is a local business created by Elizabeth Kelly. She specializes in the medium of “found art,” which is taking objects such as marine litter, drift wood and other natural materials to create beautiful works of art. Because of what she does, she is constantly reusing objects found in nature and therefore helping in the reduction of waste. Elizabeth has a keen eye and kind find beauty in the most ordinary objects. As said on her website, she can “see a piece of driftwood as an angel wing, a mermaid body or a heron head”; her creativity is boundless.
Some of the found materials that Elizabeth loves to experiment with are pebbles, sea glass, sea shells and anything that can be found on the shores of Lake Erie. Elizabeth also experiments with pyrography, which is the art of decorating wood [or leather] by burning a design on to the surface with a heated metallic point. As mentioned above, all of her pyrography is drawn freehand. Looking through her work, there are a plethora that would make great gifts for the holiday season, especially in the realm of home decor.
