Camping Safety Tips

With the weather finally getting nice here in Erie, many people will start to plan camping trips. Whether you’re a first time camper or a tried and true Bear Grylls, we have some safety tips and reminders for all of the outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen!

Keep an eye on the weather forecast!Only 33% of campers plan their trips at least one month in advance. Join this ~elite~ group to help avoid mishaps. Keeping an eye on the weather up to the day of your trip will help you be prepared, but mother nature can be unpredictable so make sure to pack for inclement weather just in case!

Make sure to pack food properly and safely!The last thing you want at your campsite is uninvited guests (i.e. bears)! Make sure all food is stored in either air tight containers or waterproof bags in an insulated cooler and also make sure to keep it away from where a hungry friend may try to take it! Your car is always a safe bet! When cooking, be sure to cook food thoroughly as food poisoning is definitely not something you want on the itinerary.

Fire safety!Campfires should be no closer than 15 feet to tents and any other surrounding plants, trees etc. Always keep the fire small and never leave the fire unattended. In case of an emergency, keep a bucket of water nearby to distinguish the fire if necessary.

Protect yourself from bugs and the sun!Always wear sunscreen even on cloudy days the sun can get you! Wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself not only from the sun, but also bugs such as ticks and mosquitos. To further prevent being bitten by a pesky insect, make sure to apply bug spray that contains DEET. Always check your body for bites and ticks when you are finished hiking and being outdoors and make sure to seek medical attention if necessary!
