Road Trip Safety

Summer is almost here! June 21st marks the first official day of the summer season; hopefully by then this Erie weather will cooperate! Many people are probably choosing to flee from these 60 degree rain filled days by going on a road trip somewhere that doesn’t replicate the Seattle environment. Here are some safety tips to make sure your trip to paradise goes smoothly!
Give your car a thorough inspection. If you aren’t confident in your car knowledge, let a professional do it for you. Always make sure to check your oil levels, tread on your tires, and wiper blades. Don’t skimp because when you are 1,000 miles away from home, you are going to be asking yourself why you did.
Make sure to get plenty of sleep!Driving while being drowsy can have the same effect as driving drunk! Every year there are 1,500 fatal accidents caused by people driving while being sleep deprived. If you find yourself getting tired, trade off with someone, stop to stretch your legs for a bit or call it a night and find somewhere to sleep! The best medicine for drowsy driving is sleep, so if you can, take a rest and then get back on the road.
Stock up on supplies!Food, oil, gas, a first aid kit and anything else you might need is crucial! Also, having the proper tools to be able to fix your car if something were to go wrong is extremely important. Being stuck on the side of the road because you ran out of gas with hungry kids in the car not only delays the fun you are trying to have, it is also very dangerous!
Buckle up!This may seem like the simplest tip to give, but it is the most important. Wearing a seatbelt can reduce your chances of being injured- or killed- in a car accident by 50%! Not to mention, it is illegal to drive without a seatbelt on!
