Labor Day: Ending the Summer with a Splash

In our culture, the summer season extends from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. People around the country have their different ways of celebrating Labor Day. It might be a weekend long barbecue, one final trip to the beach, spending the day at an amusement park, or maybe even one final summer road trip. For some students, Labor Day marks the end of their summer vacation and the beginning of the school year.

So are you stuck for ideas for Labor Day Weekend festivities? Well then, look no further, here is a comprehensive list of great outdoor activities that will help bring your summer to a close.

(1) Take a trip to the zoo/botanical gardens.Specifically, the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh is a great family activity for Labor Day Weekend. With each season comes a new show and/or theme that pertains to the plants. Earlier this summer, the conservatory paid tribute to Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings. Check out the website and see what special exhibits they have. Pittsburgh Zoo is having a giraffe meet and greet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday that will be ending on September 2nd. Also, try out their zip line that is open every weekend starting August 19th.

(2) Head out to Cedar Point.Cedar Point is filled with many fun rides and games that the entire family will be able to enjoy. Try out rides like the “Giant Wheel,” the “Raptor,” or the “Millennium Force.” Spend the day on some of the best rollercoasters and water slides. What a great way to bring the summer to an end.

(3) Road Trip.The summer is the best time to have a road trip. The weather is perfect, daylight is longer, and the music that is made for the summer is uplifting. Maybe take a road trip to upstate New York and take advantage of the wineries and their summer selections. Or if you do not live near family, maybe take a road trip and visit them before the summer is over. Just make sure to stay alert when driving and if you start to feel tired, pull over. With more cars on the road during holiday weekends, it is better to be safe than sorry.

(4) Spend the weekend at the pool, beach and/or lake.Spending time on the water is always a great time. Enjoy the sunshine and the cool water with friends and family. Maybe even head out to Saras Diner for some ice cream sundaes and burgers and then head to Presque Isle for a fun and relaxing day. Definitely take advantage of Saras before they close on September 30th. Or grab your kayak and have a friendly competition with some friends and family.

(5) Have a Cookout.This is probably the go-to for every holiday throughout the summer, so why stop now. Heat up the grill and make some of your family’s favorite recipes or even try something new. For example, grill salmon on top of lemons and it will not get stuck to the grill and it will give the salmon a lovely and refreshing flavor.

With the end of the summer approaching, it is always a great idea to spend that time with the people you enjoy, and the group activities listed above will definitely help end the summer.
